General Motors has announced plans to develop an all-new global family of Ecotec engines

Set to begin production in mid-decade, the three- and four-cylinder engines will displace between 1.0- and 1.5-liters. They'll feature direct injection, a turbocharger, multi-fuel capability and a bit smaller than today’s Ecotec engines.

GM also says the engines will deliver increased fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

The new engines will be developed jointly between General Motors, the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center.
