Mercedes has announced the addition of a diesel engine to its SLK Roadster lineup.

The new SLK 250 CDI is equipped by a 2.2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine with 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque - as much as a petrol engine with twice the displacement would normally generate.

The engine is linked to a standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission (a six-speed manual gearbox will also be available in the second quarter of next year). It helps the car to accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, accelerate from 80-120 km/h in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 243 km/h.

Mercedes said the SLK 250 CDI returns a combined fuel consumption of 4.9-liter/100 km and CO2 emissions are just 128 g/km.

The 2012 SLK 250 CDI will be available for order in Germany from September 13 with prices starting at €41,828.50, VAT included.
