At the 2011 Detroit Auto Show last January, GM launched the Chevrolet Sonic for the U.S. market in final production form. Available in both five-door hatchback and four-door sedan, the Sonic is expected to start in showrooms in the U.S. this fall. Meanwhile, in Europe, GM will retain the name Aveo and it will be sold later this summer.

According to Chevrolet’s European division, the Aveo is designed to "attract young customers." The sedan has a boot volume of 502-liter, while the hatch reaches 653-liter when the rear seats are folded down.

Chevrolet says the new-generation Aveo has one of the most rigid chassis in the segment, with the frame and the upper body as a single unit, thus ensuring a stiffer and lighter structure.

The new Aveo will be available with a choice of four petrol engines, for the first time in a small Chevrolet, a diesel engine. The petrol engine range includes two 1.2-liter engines at 70 hp and 86 hp, a 1.4-liter engine for 100 hp and and a 1.6-liter engine for 115 hp.

The most fuel-efficient is the 1.2-liter engine (86 hp), fuel consumption 5.1-liter/100 km, CO2 emissions of 119 g/100 km. while the 1.6-liter unit averages 6.6-liter/100 km.

Starting this autumn, Chevrolet will also offer a 1.3-liter turbo diesel engine featuring common-rail fuel injection, start/stop technology. Another first for a small Chevrolet will be a 6-speed automatic transmission, but Chevrolet has not yet revealed which engine will make use of it.

Currently, the price of the car has not been announced.
